Current Opportunities For ALL 4th - 6th Grade Students

EOU Student Writers’ Workshop

The EOU English/Writing program hosts the Student Writers’ Workshop for young writers in grades 3-12 on the second Saturday of every March on the Eastern Oregon University campus in La Grande. This year’s event is March 14, 2020. FridayPlus will be taking a bus with four adult chaperones. Parents are encouraged to join us. Parents may ride the bus pending space and an approved background check.

 

Students from across Eastern Oregon, along with teachers, parents, and chaperones, participate in an opening session, write in concurrent sessions with topics such as journalism and poetry, eat lunch in the EOU cafeteria, and celebrate their writing in an open mic. All participants are invited to submit their writing to the workshop anthology.

FridayPlus Baker School District 5J/Baker County YMCA Chess Tournament

You are invited to the FridayPlus Baker School District 5J/Baker County YMCA chess tournament on Friday, March 6, 2020, at Brooklyn Primary School. Students in grades K-8 are invited to this local tournament. Players of all levels, from beginner to advanced, are invited to attend. Sportsmanship is a must.

 

Parents are invited to watch but may not assist in any games. The tournament is anticipated to end at approximately 4:00 pm. Prizes awarded based on division and number of participants. Pairings will, initially, be based on grade level/age but will depend on wins/losses as the tournament proceeds.

 

When: Friday, March 6, 2020

 

Time: Check-in begins at 12:15pm

5th & 6th Grade Coding

Interested in learning about coding?  Join instructor Zach Grammon for an introductory coding class.  The 6-week course will meet at the Baker County Library on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00 pm on February 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, March 4th, and 11th and is open to 5th and 6th-grade students. The course will use an online game environment to play a coding game using text-based coding (CoffeeScript), as well as explore ideas about computer science.  Each participant will walk away with coding knowledge and a year-long login to the online program. The class is open to up to 30 students. Online registration begins January 10th and closes January 16th. TAG students will receive preference, and an online lottery will be used to fill the course. 

 

When: February 5, 12, 19, 26; March 4, 11

Chess for Success

Join us to learn the greatest game of strategy of all time - CHESS! Through a partnership with Chess for Success, chess lessons and practice sessions will be offered weekly until March. Players of all levels, from beginner to advanced, are invited to attend. 

 

South Baker chess players will meet at Baker High School in Mr. Jensen’s classroom (room 105). Students may ride the bus to Baker High School and will be asked to go directly to the classroom for practice. 

 

Students will have the opportunity to compete in the Regional Chess for Success tournament in February at Hermiston High School and may qualify to participate in the State Chess for Success tournament in Portland on March 13th. There may be at least one local tournament in Baker City. Students will be required to follow the expectations set forth by the program and school district as well as remain respectful and courteous at all times. Sportsmanship is a must.

FridayPlus Baker County Oral History Project

Are you a writer? Enjoy history? Want to learn more about our community? Have a talent for editing and technology? Maybe you just enjoy chatting with people?

 

Join us for an opportunity to interview residents of Baker County. Building on session one in which the team created a video and audio interview for the Baker Heritage Museum “Extraordinary Women of Baker County” exhibit, the student team will interview a local citizen in order to preserve a historical story from our community. Multiple opportunities exist with the project including writing, filming, editing, and interview design. The team will be compiling the interviews into a podcast in the near future. Learn the latest techniques from a local reporter and writer!

 

When: April 3, 10, 17, 24; May 8; potential to adjust dates based on spring sports schedules

Adventure Club

South Baker Intermediate School’s Adventure Club is an opportunity for students who demonstrate exceptional motivation to study a variety of topics including birds, geography/foods and fish/marine biology in an after-school format. Students will have an opportunity to learn about the topics in a hands-on setting with Community Partners and Field Experiences. There is an opportunity for the program to expand, if successful.

 

When: Tuesdays after school throughout the school year plus Field Experiences

 

Time: 3:30-5:00pm

 

Where: South Baker Intermediate School

 

Who: 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade students who show exceptional motivation for learning
