Join us to learn the greatest game of strategy of all time - CHESS! Through a partnership with Chess for Success, chess lessons and practice sessions will be offered weekly until March. Players of all levels, from beginner to advanced, are invited to attend.
Baker Middle School students meet in Mr. Valerio’s classroom on Wednesdays from 3:45-4:45pm.
Students will have the opportunity to compete in the Regional Chess for Success tournament in February at Hermiston High School and may qualify to participate in the State Chess for Success tournament in Portland on March 13th. There may be at least one local tournament in Baker City. Students will be required to follow the expectations set forth by the program and school district as well as remain respectful and courteous at all times. Sportsmanship is a must.

Baker Heritage Museum/Baker Friday+ Oral History Project
Are you a writer? Enjoy history? Want to learn more about our community? Have a talent for editing and technology? Join us for an opportunity to interview residents of Baker County. Students will create documentation of the interview that will become part of the Baker Heritage Museum “Extraordinary Women of Baker County” exhibit. Multiple opportunities exist with the project including writing, filming, editing, and interview design. Learn the latest techniques from a local reporter and writer!
When: January 10, 17, 24, 31, & February 7, 2020

BMS Anime Club
Do you enjoy anime or manga? Does Japanese art seem like something you’re interested in? Join the BMS Anime Club to learn the general history of Japanese culture as it relates to the history of anime and manga as well as current trends in the culture of this art form. Art techniques will include drawing, animation, storyline, as well as developing a written story.

BMS Drama Club - THE HOBBIT production
BMS Drama Club will teach middle school students basic skills in stage presence, role memorization, and play production. At the end of the experience, participants will present the play - The Hobbit - and be qualified, even as middle school students, to participate in select BHS Drama Club productions.

BMS Literary Club
Baker Middle School will launch its first extracurricular literary club. The club will be created by chapter members at the first meeting and will meet twice monthly. The books chosen for the Literary Club discussion will be selected based on the current Oregon Battle of the Books booklist which includes16 different titles. Each club meeting will feature three different “mini-groups” with each group discussing a different book. Members of the literary club are encouraged to join the local OBOB chapter which meets on Thursdays at the Baker County Public Library. Members who join the local chapter have the opportunity to participate in the regional OBOB competition in February and the state competition in March.
